North Coast waters will be better protected thanks to a first-of-its-kind strategic alliance agreement between SAAM Towage and Coast Tsimshian Enterprises Ltd., the shipping company announced on August 15.

Through this long-term partnership, which has spanned several years of dialogue and collaboration, SAAM Towage Canada will be the tug supplier for all vessels requiring high quality towing, mooring and vessel escort services on the traditional territory of Coast Ts’msyen. . The territory includes the port of Prince Rupert and Port Edward.

“The Strategic Alliance Agreement reflects our ongoing commitment to reconciliation and building trusting, respectful and meaningful relationships with local Indigenous communities,” said Sander Bikkers, President of SAAM Towage.

“This is a true example of how industry can honor the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous communities can ensure that trade takes place safely within their traditional territories,” says the press release.

The alliance has established long-term sustainable benefits for the Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla Nations and provides their members with access to education, training and employment opportunities.

“We are very proud that the Nations trust us to protect the traditional territory of the coastal Tsimshian peoples. Many members of the community are actively employed at SAAM, serving as captains, deckhand mechanics, and more. It is essential to have a local team to ensure the continued protection of the Territories; it’s their home and they’re proud to protect it,” Bikkers said.

Lax Kw’alaams Mayor Gary Reece said he was happy the parties were able to formalize the relationship.

“We appreciate the contributions SAAM Towage has made to our members over the years and are confident that with our support, our territories will be properly protected.”

Harold Leighton, CEO of Metlakatla Development Corporation, said he appreciated the opportunity presented by the alliance between Coast Tsimshian Enterprises and SAAM Towage.

“We look forward to many fruitful years of cooperation and success,” said Leighton.
